An extensive experimental study on characterization of plastics, carbon black filled rubbers and biodegradable polymer materials by the three ultrasonic techniques: the pulse echo method, the through transmission method and the impedance method were accomplished in this study. Ultrasonic wave speed, attenuation coefficient and loss tangent of these materials were determined. Water and sillyputty were used to calibrate our systems.

520 $a The longitudinal and shear wave speed of crystalline polymers were observed to depend on specimen thickness. However, the wave speed of amorphous polymers didn't show the dependence. It is suggested that the different crystallinity in thick and thin crystalline materials brings out the difference. The Young's modulus, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio of these polymers were calculated by ultrasonic wave properties and were compared with the data obtained by traditional methods.
520 $a A systematic study on ultrasonic acoustic properties of carbon black filled uncrosslinked PIP, SBR/BR and SBR compounds were carried out. Their longitudinal wave properties were measured by all the three methods. However, the shear properties could only be measured by the impedance method. Dependence of ultrasonic properties on base polymers, carbon black concentration, mixing condition and during agents was discussed. The impedance method could study the surface contact of rubbers on probe surface dependence on filler concentration and dispersion.
520 $a The dynamic mechanical properties of these filled rubbers in the frequency range of 0.6 Hz to 50 Hz at 25°C and 60°C were studied. It is found that time temperature superposition principle was not applicable to most of the compounds studied. Our data suggested the breakdown of three dimensional carbon black networks in many compounds when applied frequencies were higher than 8 Hz.
520 $a The pulse echo method combined with GPC, NMR and DSC together allowed to characterize the degradation of biodegradable polymer poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid). The techniques also showed difference of specimens prepared by solvent casting and that by compression molding. The longitudinal wave speed measurement was used to monitor the loss of the mechanical properties of materials during degradation in vitro.
