Purpose. Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are sounds generated in the cochlea, but measured in the ear canal. These emissions originate from outer hair cells and confirm the normal function of part of the peripheral system. Transient evoked emissions (TEOAEs) occur in response to transient acoustic stimulation. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are the result of the interaction between two primary tones simultaneously presented to the ear. OAE's are often measured under noisy conditions making it important for recording parameters to be optimized in order to produce the most accurate response. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to observe the effects of varying stimulus levels, sampling rates, and noise rejection levels on the amplitude, reliability and frequency of TEOAEs or DPOAEs in noise.

520 $a Procedures. TEOAEs and DPOAEs were measured from 10 normal hearing ears of 10 subjects, 18 to 25 years. OAE testing was performed in a soundproof booth using ILO 96 software. TEOAEs were obtained with two different noise conditions (quiet and 60 dBA of speech babble), with two levels of stimulus (80 dB and 85 dB peSPL), two acquisition counts (260 and 1000), and two noise rejection thresholds (47 dB and 54 dB) in the Quickscreen mode. DPOAEs were recorded with two noise conditions (quiet and 60 dBA of babble), two stimulus levels (65/55 and 70/60 dB SPL), and two sweep levels (2 and 4 sweeps).
520 $a Conclusion. In general, findings for TEOAE recordings indicate that overall amplitude and reproducibility responses and individual band responses were largest in noise with an 85 dB peSPL stimulus. For band response amplitudes and reproducibility, 1000 Hz was most affected by the noise. An increase in acquisition count or noise rejection level resulted in an increase in individual band amplitude responses. Noise conditions affected the DPOAE recording, particularly at 1001 and 1257 Hz. It was observed that a 5 dB increase in stimulus intensity level was equivalent to doubling the number of sweeps for DPOAE amplitude at all test frequencies. Overall, reliable OAE recordings can be measured in the presence of background noise with some manipulation in testing parameters.
