Knowledge of the impact for graduates of receiving a master's degree in nonprofit management is important because (a) the need for professionally trained managers in the nonprofit sector is growing as the number of nonprofit organizations grows, (b) the number of nonprofit-management programs at colleges and universities is growing rapidly, and (c) there is a lack of research on the outcomes for graduates of receiving a nonprofit-management degree. This study surveyed 645 graduates of three university programs offering a specialized master's degree in nonprofit management. Useable data were collected from 400 respondents. Graduates were asked to what extent 47 desirable outcomes derived from literature were true for them. They also were asked an open-ended question regarding why they were satisfied or dissatisfied with the impact of the degree on their career.

520 $a Results indicated that the three nonprofit-management master's degree programs attracted people already engaged in nonprofit sector work: 90% had been working in a nonprofit organization when they enrolled in the program, and 75% were still working in the nonprofit sector. Over half of the graduates had a favorable response to the impact of the degree on their professional lives. This result was true regardless of the number of years since the respondents had graduated, the total number of years they had worked in the nonprofit sector, or the type of nonprofit work they were currently engaged in. In response to an open-ended question, many graduates wrote that the degree gave them credibility and status, helped them in competing for jobs, or helped them do better in their current job. Some respondents had found that the degree could be applied to employment outside the nonprofit sector as well. Others were less positive, indicating that the degree had not helped their career advancement or was not respected by employers. Some respondents who had not worked in the nonprofit sector stated that the degree was not enough to get them a job without relevant experience. Despite some negative comments, however, the majority of graduates perceived that the impact of the degree on their careers was positive.
