Youth are routinely exposed to violence. It is imperative that youth are provided with the opportunities and tools necessary to prevent violence in their schools and communities and to learn and live in safe environments. Schools in the United States have reported alarming numbers regarding crime in the public schools and similar reports have been made regarding youth violence in the community. As the makeup of the American family has changed, child-care arrangements have changed significantly. The trends in youth violence, changes in the family, concerns about how youth spend unsupervised time, the increase in school accountability, and the increase in risky behaviors have all contributed to the need for structured, supervised after-school activities.

520 $a The purpose of this study was to determine the nature and extent of youth violence prevention incorporated into school-based after-school programs in Regional Study Group 2 in Virginia. Specific school divisions were examined to gain an understanding of the level of school-based after-school programs offered in the school divisions and the nature and level of youth violence prevention components offered in the after-school programs. The study also investigated which types of formal violence prevention programs were offered and provided a comprehensive list of school-based after-school programs in Regional Study Group 2.
520 $a Population parameters were utilized for this study of school-based after-school programs. Using survey research methods, 104 school-based after-school program administrators responded to the Youth Violence Prevention in School-Based After-School Program Survey. Frequencies and percentages were used to report information derived from responses to the individual survey items.
520 $a The results of this study indicated that numerous schools in the region hosted school-based after-school programs, with the greatest concentration of programs being located in elementary schools. Furthermore, it was revealed that although most after-school programs addressed violence prevention in a very limited manner, very few programs included a formal violence prevention component and a similarly small group of programs offered formal violence prevention curricula or programs based on evidence-based research.
