The purpose of this study was to identify inhibitory periods in the human lower leg. Paired mechanical stimuli (i.e. couplet) was applied to the plantar sole of the foot while the subsequent neuromuscular activity in the tibialis anterior, lateral gastrocnemius and soleus muscles of the right leg was recorded via surface electromyography. Baseline and six ISI conditions (-100ms, -0ms, -180ms, 220ms, -260ms, & -300ms) were presented to twelve healthy volunteers (males and females, 19--35 years, right-handed, and responsive to mechanical stimulation at the plantar sole). The results suggest that there is significant inhibition for the second response to a couplet in conditions prior to ISI-220ms. The attenuated nature of the neuromuscular response during the inhibitory period would suggest presynaptic inhibition. Additional studies should attempt to further characterize the neuromuscular response during the inhibitory period, determine the underlying inhibitory mechanisms, and identify possible functional significance to the identified inhibitory period.
