Context. Neuromuscular training programs have been shown to be effective in decreasing the ACL incidence rate of injury in females. These programs have focused on an overall training program to the lower extremity without examining the direct effects of strengthening the hip on controlling the knee. Objective. To examine the effects of a 4-week hip strengthening program on hip and knee joint moments across genders. Design. A 2 x 3 factorial design with repeated measures on time. Setting. Motion Analysis Laboratory at Fontaine Research Park. Patients or other participants. 30 subjects (10 male, 10 female, and 10 female controls) volunteered for this study. Intervention( s). A 4-week hip strengthening program. Main outcome measures. Mean peak hip and knee moments after the 4-week hip strengthening program. Results. A significant time by group interaction was revealed when the hip and knee joint moments were considered together ( F16,40 = 4.11, P < .001). The 4-week hip strengthening program produced significant improvements in strength when compared to the initial testing in both males and females (F 3,16 = 68.92, P < .001). In addition, the male group demonstrated significantly higher hip abduction strength than the females before and after the hip strengthening program (F1,18 = 17.44, P =.001). Pre-strengthening mean joint moments of hip internal rotation (F2,27 = 52.54, P < .001), hip extension (F2,27 = 20.07, P < .001), knee valgus (F 2,27 = 14.46, P < .001), knee varus (F 2,27 = 9.99, P = .001), knee extension (F 2,27 = 11.66, P < .001), and knee flexion ( F2,27 = 46.37, P < .001) were higher in males than both the control and treatment females. After the strengthening program, no significant differences were seen for any of the hip and knee joint variables between the males, treatment females, and control females (F16,40 = .1,48, P = .156, eta 2 = .372, 1-beta = .754). Conclusions. A 4-week hip strengthening program increases hip strength measures in male and female recreational athletes. Following the strengthening program, the female treatment group landed with similar hip and knee joint moments as the male treatment group.
