Water solubility of electrically conductive polymers (ECPs) in their doped state has received a great deal of attention recently because of improved processability, potential industrial applications, and chemically mild reaction condition. We have applied a simple synthetic method to prepare a water-soluble by sulfonating a HCl-doped polyaniline (SPANI). It shows good water solubility in all pH regions and enables us to characterize its aqueous solution and a solid film by UV-VIS spectra, ESR spectra, IR spectra, pH titration, and electrical conductivity. It is an interest for fundamental science and also for applications in such areas as rechargeable battery and pH control technologies. The degree of sulfonation, namely, sulfur-to-nitrogen (S/N) ratio is 0.6 by elemental analysis. Titration analysis of the polymer shows that the fraction of sulfonic acid groups that protonate the imine nitrogens to give semi quinone radical cations are equal in both case, about 0.53 (equivalent to the doping level, 0.34).

520 $a In the second part, interpolymer electrolyte complexes (IPEC) of a water soluble conducting polymer, such as sulfonated polyaniline and poly(3-thiopheneacetic acid), and oppositely charged polyions, poly(diallyl-N,N-dimethylammoniumchloride) (PDADMAC) were investigated. We studied the solution properties of these polymer complexes by UV-VIS spectroscopy. The ultracentrifugation was applied to the determination of the complexation. Thermal property of the complexes was investigated by thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA). The influences of pH upon the degree of doping of SPANI complexes were investigated in solution using UV-VIS spectroscopy.
520 $a In the final part, a novel strategy for the enzymatic synthesis of a water soluble, conducting polyaniline (PANI)/p-sulfonated poly(bisphenoxyphosphazene) (SPPZ) complex is presented. The enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is used to polymerize aniline in the presence of a polyanionic template, SPPZ. The polymerization was carried out in a 4.3 pH buffered aqueous solution with a stoichiometric amount of hydrogen peroxide and a catalytic amount of enzyme in room temperature. UV-visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, TGA and conductivity measurements were used for characterization. This enzymatic approach offers unsurpassed ease of synthesis, processability, stability (electrical and chemical), and environmental compatibility.
