Spatial information about insect density was used to direct management at two extremes: a within-field scale, and an areawide scale involving four South American counties. In potato fields, I tested the impact of site-specific IPM on the development of insecticide resistance of Leptinotarsa decemlineata , and on densities of natural enemies. Three 1.2 ha fields managed with site-specific IPM (0.04 ha blocks were treated with esfenvalerate plus PBO only if that block exceeded thresholds) were compared to three standard IPM fields managed on a whole-field basis. Malathion was applied to both treatments on a whole field basis when potato leafhopper densities exceeded thresholds. Treatments caused variation in the amount and spatial pattern of selection pressure. This variation was related to the occurrence and degree of resistance at both the whole- and within-field scale. All standard IPM fields showed a significant increase in resistance from preseason to postseason, while there was little to no change in an unsprayed control and two of the three site-specific fields. Parasitoids and predators tended to be denser in site-specific fields. This demonstrates that site-specific IPM has the potential to slow the development of insecticide resistance and conserve natural enemies.

520 $a The Carambola fruit fly, Bactrocera carambolae Drew and Hancock was introduced to the Western Hemisphere prior to 1975 and first detected in Suriname. Surveys to determine the geographic distribution found the flies concentrated in populated areas. The sparsely inhabited interior (the vast majority of the region) of infested countries is free of B. carambolae, with isolated exceptions. The diffusion of the fly is skewed towards the east/southeast with few inroads to the highly populated areas of the west, despite ideal climate and host presence. I hypothesize this is due to unfavorable soil structure and flooding in the west, making colonization more difficult. Presence of B. carambolae was correlated with sand/shell ridges along the generally marshy coast. Tests of the male annihilation technique were generally effective if conducted intensively, though extremely high populations required additional sanitation and protein bait spray to complete eradication. Data are also presented on fruit host range and trapping techniques.
