Mothers' concern narratives provide indicators of the worries and fears associated with parenting. Given the need for a broader notion of well-being and further research on parenting children with disabilities in middle childhood, this study analyzed concerns, well-being and child-functioning relying on a subsample of 97 families from the Early Intervention Collaborative Study (EICS) (Hauser-Cram, Warfield, Shonkoff & Krauss, 2001). The primary hypothesis examined mothers' concerns and well-being at age five and age ten. Mothers' concern mode i.e. minimal, emergent or worried, and high stress, and mothers' concern mode and depressive symptoms were not significantly associated. Analyses also examined number of mothers' concerns and mothers' well-being scores. Concerns were significantly correlated to stress scores but not depressive symptoms. Additional analyses revealed that mothers' child-related stress scores and mothers' concerns increased significantly from age five to age ten. Mothers' being worried was also associated with being proactive. The second hypothesis, which examined whether mothers' being proactive would predict child-related stress was not supported. Mothers' being proactive at age five on behalf of their child did not predict lower child-related stress when child was age ten years. Hypothesis three examined whether mothers' being proactive would predict child functioning. Mothers' being proactive was not a significant predictor of child problem or adaptive behavior at age ten, but did explain some variance in the child's cognitive performance at age ten. Complementing the analyses, mixed-method case studies relying on qualitative and quantitative data illustrated the findings related to mothers' concerns, proactive indicators and well-being. Findings suggest that mothers can be concerned without these concerns affecting their mental health. The investigation of concerns has potential to contribute to the dialogue about methodological approaches to understanding the well-being of mothers over time.
