The purpose of this study is to determine the correlates and predictors of coping within a previously collected data set of adult daughters providing care to a parent with cancer. The study seeks to examine how the daughter's coping strategies are influenced by the caregiving situation, which in turn affects the psychological distress experienced by the caregiver in her attempt to fulfill caregiving duties.

520 $a The sample for this secondary investigation comes from the first wave of data (n = 310) collected from a longitudinal study of daughters and their parents. Specific objectives of the study are: (1) to identify whether the coping strategies employed by the caregiving daughters reflected emotion-focused and problem-focused strategies; (2) to determine the relationship between coping strategies and daughter characteristics and parent characteristics; (3) to determine the relationship between perceived social support and coping strategies; (4) to explore the relationship between various coping strategies and their effect on psychological functioning; and (5) to identify the effect social support has in mediating and/or moderating the relationship between coping strategies and psychological status. Data analysis includes factor analysis, bivariate correlations, and multiple regression analysis.
520 $a The results reveal a five-factor structured instrument to measure coping strategies, all under the domains of emotion and problem-focused strategies. The five factors were treated as independent variables and used for subsequent analyses. The results also revealed that the better the parent rated their health, and the more roles the caregiving daughter was involved with was associated with problem-focused strategies, whereas being an older caregiver, daughter's education level, and the parent's low health rating was associated with emotion-focused strategies. Higher levels of perceived social support, including the social support subscales, were correlated with problem-focused strategies. Problem-focused strategies were also correlated with lower levels of depressive symptomatology and anxiety. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that coping did not predict depressive symptomatology levels, but was a predictor of anxiety levels. Lastly, social support was found to mediate the relationship between coping strategy and psychological functioning (levels of depressive symptomatology and anxiety), however no moderating effects were found.
