Unprotected heterosexual intercourse poses life-altering and life-threatening health consequences for adolescent African American women. Feminists argue that the patriarchal system affords men more sexual freedom than women; yet, we know little about the current meanings of this sexual double standard (SDS) and how it affects young women's heterosexual risk behaviors, particularly for African American women. The few studies that have been conducted generally use simplistic measures of the SDS and are rarely theoretically grounded. This study advances the literature by developing the groundwork for a multi-dimensional measure of the SDS, creating a theoretical foundation for examining the effects of the SDS on young women's heterosexual behaviors, and empirically examining the meanings and behavioral effects of the SDS for a population of adolescent African American women.

520 $a Based on a secondary analysis of data collected from 15 to 17 year old African American adolescents and their mothers, I examine three research questions: (1) Does the SDS exist? (2) What are the meanings of the SDS? and (3) Does the SDS increase adolescent African American women's heterosexual risk behaviors? I use qualitative and quantitative methods.
520 $a Based on quantitative measures of the SDS, 35% of the adolescent-mother dyads hold at least one type of SDS (i.e. for having sex, for many partners, or for pregnancy). The findings from the qualitative analyses reveal four dimensions of the SDS: (1) the Madonna/whore dichotomy; (2) the insatiable male sex drive; (3) active males and passive females; and (4) power dynamics as sexual interaction. Study participants often accept certain tenants of the SDS and reject others. I hypothesize that the SDS increases young African American women's sexual behaviors, and sexual risk behaviors; however, logistic regression analyses do not support the study hypotheses. I postulate that the reason for this lack of significant findings is in part due to poor measures of the SDS, and propose directions for creating a more valid set of measures. I provide directions for future research as well as implications for public health initiatives to reduce unwanted pregnancy, STD, and HIV infection among young women by reducing the SDS.
