The objective of this research study was to determine if there was a significant difference between immigrant children and adolescents in their friendships and peer interaction patterns which can affect the amount of social and verbal interaction of the L2 learner. The study hypothesized that proximity plays a key role in children's selecting of and interacting with peers while ethnicity and language play a crucial role in adolescents' selecting of and interacting with peers. So it predicted that immigrant children have more social interaction with cross-ethnic & L2 friends and peers than with same-ethnic & L1 friends and peers whereas immigrant adolescents have more social interaction with same-ethnic & L1 friends and peers than with cross-ethnic & L2 friends and peers. To test the hypotheses, the peer interaction patterns of 30 Korean immigrant children were compared with those of 30 Korean immigrant adolescents. The subjects were all from Central California. The data for the testing of the hypotheses were collected through an one-on-one in-depth interview with each of the sixty subjects. The analysis of the study confirmed the hypotheses. This study suggests that the different peer interaction patterns are partly responsible for the linguistic pattern observed in naturalistic learning environments or context-rich environments, that is, younger children, who are supposedly inferior to older children and adults in many ways, eventually become better second language speakers.
