The objectives of this work have been to improve the representation of shallow convection in mesoscale numerical models, to evaluate the effects of modeled shallow convection on the thermodynamic vertical structure in continental summertime conditions, and to evaluate the interactions of the modeled shallow convection with other physical processes, such as radiation, surface processes, and planetary boundary layer (PBL) turbulence.

520 $a The case of 6 July 1997 over Oklahoma was chosen to address the objectives of the thesis. During this day a field of shallow clouds develops over much of Oklahoma under mostly barotropic conditions.
520 $a The PSU turbulence model was also revised in order to improve its computation of buoyant production of turbulence in cases where water phase changes are important.
520 $a The PSU shallow convection parameterization was modified to consider an ensemble of updraft-initiating parcels, each one changing from time step to time step and having random thermodynamic perturbations with respect to its environment. The updraft model used in the shallow convection scheme was also modified to make it respond better to the smaller thermodynamic perturbations of shallow convective updrafts, as compared with deep convection.
520 $a After the calibration and validation cases, the modified turbulence and shallow convection sub-models were used in a one-dimensional (1D) version of the mesoscale model MM5 to study the morning development of shallow convection on 6 July 1997 over 30 MESONET stations in Oklahoma.
520 $a The inclusion of shallow convection in the model reduced the water vapor biases around local noon by drying the PBL. Marginal reduction in temperature biases also were found due to the radiative shielding effect of clouds. The modeled shallow convection produced significant effects of moistening and destabilizing the atmospheric layer above the turbulent PBL.
520 $a Modeled shallow cloud fractions showed low sensitivity to surface moisture conditions, but, due to the vertical transport by shallow convection, the atmospheric layer affected by changes in surface moisture was significantly deeper than in model runs without shallow convection.
520 $a Implementation of the shallow convection in the full 3-D mesoscale model will be helpful for better understanding of the interactions of shallow convection with mesoscale circulations and its effects on deep convection development. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
