This study analyzes some examples of language change that have occurred in the phonology, morphology and syntax of Cimbrian, a Bavarian dialect, which arose during the Middle High German period and has been used since the middle Ages in small Alpine speech islands in Italy. Cimbrian currently only survives in Luserna, a village with a population of 300 where three languages are now used: Italian, Cimbrian and Trentino, the local regional dialect of Romance origin. Even though some of the changes are probably internally-motivated, the different languages in contact may have played a major role in language change especially in the course of the 20th century, when contact became more intense as a result of partial interruption of language transmission.

520 $a This analysis compares data from short stories published in 1905 with data collected during fieldwork in 2003 in the form of free conversations with native speakers of Cimbrian and shows how language change has occurred in the phonology of Cimbrian in the form of phoneme substitution, gemination and changes in the distribution of /r/ allophones. As for morphology, this study suggests that simplification and reduction in the case system may be underway, while syntax is showing signs of convergence toward Romance-looking structures.
520 $a Within the area of language contact studies, this research draws from previous work on language contact and shift and similar case studies on language death combining the discussion with newer approaches addressing the external conditions that foster language shift. This study complements and expands previous research that has so far primarily dealt with the lexicon or the syntax of written sources of other varieties of Cimbrian. As of today, there has been no study on phonological and morphological change in Cimbrian in general and in Luserna Cimbrian in particular. In addition, the use of data recorded from people of all age groups represented in the community, besides allowing for considerations on cross-age variation inside the community, can provide a starting point for future research on the development of the dialect.
