Children and adolescents from divorced families consistently demonstrate poor adjustment (e.g., poorer cognitive achievement and troublesome behaviors). Over the last 20 years, researchers have transitioned to child perceptions of interparental conflict (IPC) as a better predictor of offspring maladjustment. Their research, however, has been complicated by the biases of those (i.e., parents and teachers) who evaluate the children, and by the parent-child relationship as a mediating variable. As a result, more recently, self-report measures have been relied upon for some of the most helpful data in understanding offspring adjustment to IPC.

520 $a The author administered three self-report measures to 60 undergraduate psychology students (50 female, 10 male) at George Fox University (Newberg, OR) as an attempt to explain the connection between perception of IPC and poor cognitive and social adjustment. These measures included Rest's (1979) Defining Issues Test (DIT), a measure of principled moral reasoning; Rohner's (1986) Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire (PARQ); and Emery and O'Leary's (1982) Personal Data Form (PDF) Conflict scale. It was hypothesized that males would be more impacted by IPC than females (Hypothesis 1); perception of IPC would negatively correlate with principled moral reasoning (Hypothesis 2); and parental rejection would significantly covary with principled moral reasoning scores in relation to IPC (Hypothesis 3). The results supported the second and third hypotheses, with the unexpected finding that only maternal rejection covaried with IPC in relation to principled moral reasoning. Theoretical and clinical implications of these results are discussed, in addition to suggestions for further research.
