Exploring assisted living facility (ALF) caregiving assistance of older adults may reveal new knowledge about staff training needs. The problem is that there is limited training of staff in long-term care facilities. The knowledge gap focuses on the training needs of ALF staff in the geriatric field of older adult residents. ALF staff geriatric background knowledge may have an impact on training needs. This basic qualitative interpretive research explored ALF staff caregiving training needs in the State of Maryland. This study focuses on two research questions: (a) What is the current geriatric training and/or education experience of ALF staff in the State of Maryland? and (b) What are the additional geriatric training and/or education needs of ALF staff in the State of Maryland? The first research question focused on four themes: (a) knowledge, (b) training, (c) skills, and (d) education. The second research question focused on two themes: (a) geriatric education and (b) ongoing geriatric training. A need for staff training related to geriatrics was demonstrated by standardized open-ended interviews with ALF staff in different Maryland ALFs. It is critical for any caregiver to have knowledge of geriatric care of older adults. Knowledgeable ALF staff with proper geriatric health care experience affects residents' health. This research will assist ALF staff training needs in caring for older adults residing in long-term care facilities. ALF staff training can include the health and caregiving aspects of the older adult's psychological, behavioral, and physical status. Gerontologists, social scientists, health service researchers, and policy researchers have significant interest in studying and researching ALFs at the turn of the 21st century. The research of ALF staff training needs will be reflected upon investigating and examining how they practice appropriate caregiving techniques for older adult individuals, and how ALFs choose their staff to carry on the caregiving role. The discovery of the findings and/or results will be based on ALF staff training needs.
