Scope and method of study. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS as they relate to hegemony. Professional and cultural hegemony were explored within the context of HIV/AIDS. Professional hegemony was investigated regarding the medical community and HIV/AIDS social support organizations. Cultural hegemony was explored through the conceptual ideology of rurality. Goffman's Frame Analysis was used as a framework which to explore hegemony within the context of persons living with HIV/AIDS. Participants in this study were recruited from local HIV/AIDS organizations, support groups, and through newspaper advertisements. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted on 27 participants.

520 $a Findings and conclusions. The data revealed that hegemony offers an insightful approach to framing the experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS in the mid-south. Both professional and cultural hegemony yielded an interesting interpretation of experiences with health care, medical therapies, social support, and stigma among people living with HIV/AIDS. Although professional and cultural hegemony appear to influence one another, the hegemonic influences of the medical community and social support organizations were more vital to physical and social-emotional health among persons living with HIV/AIDS than cultural hegemonic influences. Persons in this study experienced problems with obtaining medications and health services when they challenged the bureaucratic and powerful systems that dominate people infected with this disease. In addition, the ideologies that are characterized by a sociocultural rural mentality influence and shape the experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS. Integrating the theoretical ideas of Erving Goffman and Frame Analysis with the conceptual ideas of Antonio Gramsci and Hegemony provides a fruitful interpretation of the experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS.
