Socioeconomic factors have a profound effect upon the occurrence of disease and illness, as well as on how we react to being ill. Social factors affect not only life expectancy, but also the risks of contracting major types of disease and the adequacy of the health care received. People with more affluent backgrounds are less likely to suffer from serious diseases or illnesses. Health and illness are strongly influenced by aspects of social structure.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The purpose of this study was to investigate, provide, highlight, and trace some of the important works and issues concerning the correlation beween socioeconomic factors and health status. To obtain the goal of a systematic review of the literature, the study used the most important data base of references and information systems in the fields of health, medicine, sociology, and economics.
520 $a The study concludes that health is where all social forces come together, and that the health status of any population is related more to the determinants of health than it is to the causes of disease. Access to practitioners and technologies dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of disease is important, but no more important than access to safe food and water, meaningful employment with adequate wages, adequate housing, a good education, life free from discrimination, and a safe environment. Good health cannot be achieved without society's concern for ethical and human decision-making.
520 $a To improve the health status of a poor population, policy makers should address the health of the poor more broadly. Universal medical coverage may facilitate access to care and improve the health status of the poor. However, to eliminate the health gap between the poor and the rich, policy makers must look beyond the traditional bounds of medical coverage and address broader societal problems such as poverty and poor education.
