This research reviews the literature of adolescent females of African American and Hispanic descent who have attempted suicide from the perspective of narrative therapy and theory. Narrative therapy conceptualizes the adolescent female of color as a conscious author of her life and an active participant in treatment. This research focuses on ways that narrative therapy creates a collaborative treatment relationship with these highly vulnerable adolescents, who often don't seek therapy or drop out prematurely. This dissertation emphasizes ways that adolescents would become co-authors of the treatment process using a narrative therapy approach, from naming the problem to describing the array of meanings surrounding the event. In addition, the dissertation emphasizes the stance of the narrative therapist as someone who views the client as an authority on their own experiences of attempting suicide and regularly consults with the adolescent about the effects of therapy. In attending to the contexts surrounding the suicide attempt and to the hierarchical relations implicit in psychotherapy, issues of race, power, class and gender are embedded throughout this narrative process.
