This study addresses the historical development and cultural significance of Ghanaian powder-glass beads and the Akan golden dual-disk pectoral---two art forms largely unrecognized by Western scholars---within a conceptual framework based in an understanding of the special affinity between beads and gold as precious and sacred substances in customary beliefs and practice.

520 $a This dissertation combines a more distanced scholarly approach, which uses archaeological evidence to reconstruct early trade history, with firsthand historical accounts and ethnographic research. In order to discern the indigenous systems of belief and cultural meaning that structured the incorporation and transformation of these imported materials and art forms, the author draws on historical and contemporary ethnographic evidence---early travel accounts and more recent field studies, including her own research in Ghana's Krobo and Asante regions.
520 $a It is proposed that the lack of Western recognition and appreciation for Ghanaian powder-glass beads and the golden dual-disk pectoral is the result of a failure, historically and to the present day, to comprehend the power of the maternal principle as a social ideal and cultural metaphor. The generative powers associated with both beads and gold, and the fertility and enduring maternal benevolence of the breast-like Asante dual-disk pectoral, are of fundamental importance within Gold Coast cultures. An understanding and appreciation of Ghanaian art and culture requires a recognition of the centrality of this generative, maternal principle.
