The use of various medical systems, either simultaneously or independently, is an important option for patients looking to cure themselves of illness and disease. Most cultures around the world use a pluralistic system when addressing healthcare concerns. My thesis focuses on the multiple healing modalities available to people in Ladakh, North India. It examines health-seeking behaviors used by patients, the dynamics involved between conventional and non-conventional systems, and how these interact to give the patient the best comprehensive care possible. My research looks at how practitioners and patients view alternative modalities. I chose to focus on the region of Ladakh due the fact that ladakhis continue to use multiple healing systems when illness and imbalance occur. The region consists of mostly Buddhist and Muslim peoples with a small Hindu minority. People in Ladakh explore and utilize a variety of healing systems in search of the best option for their particular illness or imbalance. The modalities include lamaism; Buddhist religious healing; shamanism; amchi medicine; traditional Tibetan medicine, and conventional allopathic medicine.

520 $a Based on ten months of ethnographic fieldwork, my thesis also incorporates both a visual and photographic component. This combination helps give a better understanding of the complexities and realities of Ladakhi healthcare. My research and visual documentation focuses on one family's road to health as they use four different healers in search for balance and a cure to their ailments. My thesis and ethnography/documentary provides an in-depth look at both the traditional and biomedical healing systems in present day Ladakh.
